A few different words rhyme with witch. I’m afraid this page might become a hodge podge, a hedge hog, a humble hairy hen, a hollow for harrowing ideas. In summation, I’m uncertain. I hope you don’t mind too much.
The beginning of a new enterprise is intimidating and this one is no different. I’ve been toying with the idea for a while. That’s how everyone starts, no? At the moment I don’t have a group of folks in San Francisco with whom I might tear apart books, so I’m making my own space.
I don’t plan to extend a great big paw and scrape the surface. I’m looking to pry apart the lines. Reading lightly between them isn’t enough. This isn’t just reading to review but reading to reflect and to find the connections between the present and the past. Where do myths reappear in popular culture? How can we spot them? Why do we reuse those forms?
I can guarantee that this is a space for exploring text and myth, beauty and horror, what’s socially considered ugly and what’s culturally considered in poor taste. I plan to plant a copse that will grow into a forest. Those old fairy tales are fraught with ill deeds transpiring in the thicket a few hundred yards into the woods. I can only promise to create a similar mystical grove while debunking the witch in the wood.
Word witch! Great name. Looking forward to reading whatever the grey matter comes up with. May your copse take root and spread.
